Seeing Father Christmas is the one Christmas outing most families with young children plan around, and in Cambridgeshire the choice runs from a tiny museum grotto to a steam train with Santa on board. Prices, ages and booking rules vary a lot, so it pays to look before you book.
We checked every grotto below in early November 2026. Where a venue has published its 2026 dates and prices, we give them. Grottos sell out quickly once tickets go live, so book as soon as you know your plans.
Details were accurate when we checked them on 5 November 2026. Dates, prices and availability change quickly in the run-up to Christmas, so please check each venue’s website before booking.
Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire
The National Trust estates and a couple of the larger garden centres run the main grottos south of the city, with Cambridge’s own Christmas village on Parker’s Piece in the middle.
Father Christmas at Anglesey Abbey
Indoor activity
- Father Christmas welcomes families inside the house at Anglesey Abbey, the National Trust property at Lode near Cambridge, after a short adventure with a cast of Christmas characters
- 2026 visits run on 5 and 6 December, 12 and 13 December and from 18 to 22 December, with slots between 9:45am and 3pm
- Tickets cost £24.95 per child, including one accompanying adult and a gift made with Keel Toys, and must be booked online
- The house is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the visitor centre, and the National Trust asks you to arrive 15 minutes before your slot
- Each visit lasts about 30 minutes, ends with a story and a photo with Father Christmas in the Lower Gallery, and is recommended for children aged 3 to 10
- The house is also dressed for Christmas from 1 December 2026 with A Festive Voyage, so you can see the rooms on the same visit
Address: Anglesey Abbey, Quy Road, Lode, Cambridge CB25 9EJ

How to book: Online through the National Trust
Meeting Father Christmas in a Jacobean house is about as traditional as it gets, and parents get the decorated rooms and the Winter Garden thrown in. Weekend slots go first, so the weekday dates from 18 to 22 December are the best bet if you are booking late.
Father Christmas at Christmas at Wimpole
Outdoor activity
- Wimpole’s evening light trail includes a glimpse of Father Christmas along the route
- The trail runs on selected evenings from Friday 20 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027
- This is a sighting on the trail rather than a private grotto visit, so there is no one-to-one chat or present
- Tickets are timed and separate from National Trust membership, so members pay for trail entry too
- Parking is bought with your tickets; National Trust members park free if they book it at least 24 hours ahead
- Only assistance dogs are allowed on the trail
Address: Wimpole Estate, Arrington SG8 0BW
Website: nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/cambridgeshire/wimpole-estate/christmas-at-wimpole
How to book: Online through the National Trust’s Christmas at Wimpole page, which links to Ticketek
If your children are past the sitting-on-Santa’s-knee stage but still believe, Wimpole is a good compromise. They get the lights, the music and a sighting, without the queue for a grotto. For a proper visit with a present, pair it with one of the grottos elsewhere in this guide.

Santa at Christmas in Cambridge, Parker’s Piece
Outdoor activity
- Father Christmas visits the Christmas in Cambridge village on Parker’s Piece every weekend through the festive season, walking around the site to greet families
- The village also has an ice rink, big wheel, curling lanes, a funfair and a Christmas market, and is free to enter
- The 2026 event runs from Friday 13 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027
- This is a chance meeting as he walks round rather than a booked grotto visit with a present
- The site is in the city centre, so come by park and ride, bus or train
Address: Parker’s Piece, Cambridge CB1 1NA
Website: christmasincambridge.co.uk
How to book: No booking needed to meet Santa; skating and the big wheel are booked online
Bumping into Father Christmas on Parker’s Piece is the easy option if you are already in the city for shopping or skating. Expect it to be busy on weekends. For a proper sit-down visit with a present, pair it with one of the grottos elsewhere in this guide.

Huntingdonshire and Peterborough
West of the county, the big draws are the Nene Valley Railway’s Santa trains and a farm that turns its Christmas week into a full day out, with smaller museum and garden centre grottos in the towns.
Nene Valley Railway Santa Specials
Indoor and outdoor
- Christmas at the Railway Santa Specials run on weekends from Saturday 28 November to Sunday 20 December 2026, plus Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 December
- Trains leave Wansford station, and Santa Claus visits every child at their seat with a wish coin that they swap for a present at Santa’s Toy Shop afterwards
- Standard tickets cost £30 for adults and children aged 2 to 15 and £12 for under twos, and private compartments for up to six cost £240
- Booking is essential, and Quiet Trains for children and adults with SEND leave at 10:30am on Sunday 29 November and Saturday 5 December
- Wansford has a large free car park and a café, and Mrs Claus and Santa’s Post Office are on the platform before you board
- The railway’s office is open every day from 9am to 4pm on 01780 784444
Address: Nene Valley Railway, Wansford Station, Stibbington, Peterborough PE8 6LR
Website: nvr.org.uk
How to book: Online through the Nene Valley Railway website
A Santa Special is the grotto visit that children remember longest, because it comes with a heritage train, usually steam hauled. The whole experience takes about two hours including time on the platform. It works best for children aged two to eight. Book as early as you can, as December weekends go quickly.

Christmas at Sacrewell Farm
Indoor and outdoor
- Christmas at Sacrewell runs from Saturday 19 to Thursday 24 December 2026 at the farm near Wansford, west of Peterborough
- Children chat to Father Christmas, have a family photo, choose a gift from the present room and get a personalised letter
- The Christmas Village is included in the ticket, with marshmallow toasting, bauble making, reindeer food, face painting, games and a sleigh to climb aboard
- Every adult ticket includes a glass of mulled wine
- An elf trail round the farm ends with a giant chocolate coin, and the animals, outdoor play areas and indoor Playbarn are open too
- Your booked time is for the visit to Father Christmas, not your arrival, so you can do the rest of the farm before or after
Address: Sacrewell Farm, Great North Road, Thornhaugh, Peterborough PE8 6HJ
Website: sacrewell.org.uk
How to book: Online through the Christmas at Sacrewell page on the farm’s website
Sacrewell makes a whole day of it, with the animals, the play barn and Father Christmas all on one ticket. Because it only runs in the last week before Christmas, it books up fast, so do not leave it late. It sits a few minutes from the Nene Valley Railway at Wansford, so you could do both in one December weekend.
Santa’s Grotto at Huntingdon Garden and Living

- Tickets for the 2026 Santa’s Grotto are on sale now

A Note From Inside Cambridge
We will add more grottos as venues announce their 2026 dates, so check back before you book.
If you run a grotto anywhere in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough and would like it listed, get in touch and tell us the dates, prices and ages it suits.
Before You Go
- Book as soon as tickets are released, as weekend and school holiday slots sell out first
- Check what is included in the price, such as a present, photos, crafts or entry to the wider venue
- Ask about quiet sessions if your child finds crowds or noise difficult; the Nene Valley Railway runs two Quiet Trains this year
- Arrive 15 minutes early for timed slots, especially at larger venues where the grotto is a walk from the car park
- If a grotto has not released dates yet, follow its social media for the moment tickets go on sale
- Bring a coat even for indoor grottos, as many involve outdoor queues or walks between buildings
